..:: First European-Mexican IT Workshop ::..

April 9 th -11 th , 2008. Veracruz, Mexico


As the first action within the LAEMI framework, the first LAEMI workshop took place from April 9th to 12th, 2008 in Xalapa, Veracruz The workshop was hosted by the National Laboratory for Advanced Computer Science, LANIA, having around 54 researchers (24 Europeans and 30 Mexicans), 17 Mexican businessmen and consultants, 16 observers and authorities of the European Union, CONACyT, Government and academic institutions of the four countries, in addition to the six members of the Steering Committee of the Workshop, making a total of about 100 participants.


The first LAEMI workshop objectives were related to:

  1. Encourage the formation of working thematic groups among Spain, France, Germany and Mexico, in order to establish a new cooperation framework that allows actions with the highest international impact on IT's.
  2. Detect working group themes of common interest among the four countries, trying to align ther research interests with the themes presented on the FP7.
  3. Involve from the beginning, enterprises located in Mexico and Europe in order to establish new partnership and cooperation points to ensure innovation in Mexican participant enterprises.
  4. Promote the definition of the first common scenarios to start project cooperation among Mexico and most of the three European countries involved.
  5. Establish a strategy for the establishment of LAEMI as well as a cooperation mechanism.


The program also included key-note lectures given by researchers from the four participating countries and representatives of the European Union, as well as thematic group sessions of common interest between Mexico and at least two of the three European countries:

  • Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing & Soft Computing
  • Computer Architectures
  • Bio-informatics & Mathematical Modeling
  • Databases, Web Computing & Software Engineering
  • Image Processing & Robotics
  • Networks, Distributed Systems & Mobile Computing


As well as special sessions to identify projects aimed to solve problems such as:

  • Disaster Management
  • Health: Automated Diagnosis and Personal Care Assistant
  • Tourism: Mobility Assistance and Intelligent Tourist Management
  • Human Environments Assisted by Robots
  • Education: Applied and Educated People
  • Bio-Informatics

The organization of the workshop was conducted by a Steering Committee composed by six members of the four participating countries:

  • Spain: Francisco Quiles, Universidad de Castilla La Mancha en Albacete and Luis Orozco, Universidad de Castilla La Mancha en Albacete
  • Francia: Michel Jambu, Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique, INRIA
  • Mexico: Cristina Loyo, Laboratorio Nacional de Informática Avanzada, LANIA and Ofelia Cervantes, Universidad de las Américas Puebla, UDLAP
